While many farmers in our community have pursued USDA Organic certification; many more are not certified organic yet following the similar healthy farming practices. We have endeavored to identify those farmers with such philosophies here. They are listed based on whether or not they operate a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. If you are not familiar with these functions, there are benefits to both!
- A CSA program involves paying at the beginning of the season for a (usually) weekly share of whatever produce is being harvested at the farm that week. Some CSAs also include other items like options to purchase meats and cheeses, flowers, or artisanal value-added products. CSAs provide the benefit of a steady source of a variety of produce and the opportunity to try new foods that you may not have purchased on your own. Many farmers provide recipes to help you prepare those meals. Some of these farmers also operate farm stands or participate in farmers markets; others do not.
- Farmers not operating a CSA program allow you to purchase or order the specific produce you desire in the specific quantity you need. It can be a great way to get to know a variety of local farmers without the commitment of a weekly CSA–a particularly great option for those who travel frequently. These farmers operate farm stands, attend farmers markets, and/or provide delivery services. For a list of farmers markets in the Pittsburgh area, see Edible Allegheny’s website (the farmers listed on that site may or may not be on our recommmendations list).
