Do you use synthetic fertilizers? Yes. Fertilizer is used once a year along with lime application on hayfields as recommended by soil testing from NCDA. Weed killer is not used. Problem weeds, such as thistle and red root nettle are dug out by hand.
Do you use any of the following: nonorganic pesticides, herbicides, parasiticides, or fungicides? Yes In cattle, Permectrin is used for fly spray in the summer, Ivomec Eprinex Pour-On for worming is used once a year on the adult cows.

Beef: Black Angus all cuts in limited supply sold by the piece or by pound lots
Chicken: Pasture Raised Cornish Cross (taking a break in 2019, will have in 2020 summer)
Presently have necks, livers, hearts, stew chickens.
Turkey: Keep checking for our 2019 turkey November schedule.
White Broad Breasted turkeys
Honey: Journeyman beekeeper, Janet Peterson, tends 5-10 hives kept on the farm for pollination. Honey is sold by the pound, seasonally.
Produce: Our U-Pick blueberries presently have a waiting list
Other: Jams made with fruit grown on the farm (Blueberry, Blackberry, Raspberry and “Bruise Berry” – black and blue berries, our signature jam.)
Other: Salves, Lotion Bars and Body Butters made with our beeswax, propolis, honey, and herb grown on the farm.

Provide any other details or comments you want: Cloud 9 Farm is an oasis of protected land dedicated to sustainable conservation of the farmland, the abundant forest, and the animals and wildlife that also call this place home -in perpetuity. We were formally recognized as such by the state of North Carolina and Buncombe County in 2016.
We are a working farm of timber, cows, chickens, blueberries and honey bees. We have a 4-acre event area for weddings and family events with pond and game yard. Four accommodations for vacation rental: Cloud 9 Relaxation Home and Silver Lining Cabin, 6-8 people ($250-275/nt), Heavenly Hideaway Cabin and Sawyer’s Cabin for 2 people ($135-200/nt). How to describe your location:
Cloud 9 Farm is located just 15 minutes SE of Asheville, NC of Hwy 74A. With the perfect mix of mountain isolation and city accessibility, it’s just 10 minutes to the Blue Ridge Parkway; 15 minutes to Asheville, the Biltmore Estate, or the Grove Park Inn; and 20 minutes to Chimney Rock or Lake Lure.
Animal Husbandry
Do you use antibiotics and/or hormones? No. With a closed herd and good management, we have no need for antibiotics and/or hormones.
Are the animals pasture-fed? Yes with grain feeding the last 45 days as recommended by Chef Katie Button in Asheville, owner of Curate.
How much pasture fed and for how long: 18 months +/-
Do you practice managed grazing? Yes, we have 5 rotational pastures.
Do you apply compost or compost tea? No
Do you apply other soil amendments? Yes, lime
Do you use supplemental feed? Yes, to keep the cattle tame.
Do you purchase pre-mixed feed or do you grind your own? Purchase
Provide any details you want: We get our feed from the Bartlett Milling Company in Statesville, NC. Their grains have no anti-biotics, hormones, or ingredients derived from animals, plus, what really attracted us was they mill in Statesville, so it’s fresh and they incorporate essential plant oils like anise, garlic, horseradish and juniper that improve gastrointestinal function. For those of you wondering, they do not claim to be organic or non-GMO.
Do you personally attend to your animals at least once a day or do you hire help or farmers to do that for you? Personally Attend
Provide any details you want: We keep a small closed herd of 5 Angus breeder cows and a bull. We change bulls into steers and grow them 18 months +/-. We sell the heifers to other breeders. We are a small operation with the goal of providing beef for ourselves and having extra to sell.
For Chickens we have chicken “tractors” moveable pens. Turkeys are pasture raised.

Meat butchered on the farm? No for cattle, Yes for chickens and turkeys: NOTE: We have our own inspected processing unit on the farm and do all the harvesting, processing, vacuum sealing and freezing ourselves.
Describe or explain any butchering practices: We are registered with the state of North Carolina (NCDA) and have a meat handler’s license Exempt PL90-492 which means our water is tested, freezers inspected and books looked at twice per year.
