Resource Guide—Food, Farms, and Health Practitioners
Capay Valley and the western area of Yolo County, CA
Provided by the Capay Valley Chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation
WestonAPrice.org
Volunteer chapter leader: Lauren Ayers, 530 796-2463, Lauren.yolocounty@gmail.com
In the 23 years since the Price Foundation began, 500 chapters have formed around the world. Three dedicated staffers in Washington DC and active volunteers in many nations organize events and publish the quarterly journal, Wise Traditions, which illustrates conditions Dr. Price found in healthy cultures:
- Toxin-free, nutrient-dense vegetables and fruit
- Pastured/grass-fed milk products, eggs, meat
- Good fats such as butter, lard, coconut oil, olive oil and fish liver oil
- Bone broth
- Fermented foods (sauerkraut, yogurt, kefir)
- Sourdough
- Soaked grains, seeds, nuts
- Organ meats including liver, heart, kidneys
These habits, plus minimizing empty calories and polyunsaturated seed oils (canola, corn, safflower, soy, sunflower), aided by nutrition and healing info from holistic authors and health practitioners, have many health benefits, as described in hundreds of articles accessible for free via the Foundation’s very educational website, WestonAPrice.org.

Capay Canyon Ranch continues a long family tradition of organic farming and processing in California. We have been almond growers since 1972 and in 1979 we became almond handlers. Three years later we planted organic flame table grapes in order to diversify. In 1996 we modernized our almond packing plant with the latest equipment in order to maximize our efficiency and increase quality of product.

Our family has been farming in the Central Valley since emigrating from the Azores in the 1960’s, buying their own farmland in 1974. The third generation wanted to do something different, so we are certified organic by CCOF with a focus on pasture based meat production. We practice holistic grazing management, inter-cropping within orchards, and have invested in solar power generation on our farm. Our cold room and freezers are about 70% solar powered. Our olive and fruit orchards are utilized by wildlife for cover and food. Fruits of the orchards: extra virgin olive oil, apricots, plums, heirloom Bartlett pears, figs, pomegranates, oranges, Fuyu persimmons, Asian pears, quince, Marcona almonds and pecans.
We offer our certified extra virgin olive oil in 500 ml, 375 ml, ½ gal, and one gal sizes. We also offer our same high quality extra virgin organic olive oil infused with Meyer Lemon, Garlic or Basil in a 375 ml size. Check our website for pricing and shipping information. Grass Fed Beef and Lamb available year round.
We have a limited mailing list for fruit, eggs and some meats for local pickup only and whole animal shares. Please contact us if you’d like to be added to this list.

In 2001 I met Monica Spiller and began growing the heirloom wheat named Sonora that she revived. I have grown it every year since on my CCOF certified organic farm In the Capay Valley. I offer whole berries in 25 lb bags and also superfine and medium grinds on my Austrian Stone mill- milled fresh to order. The farm is certified organic (CCOF) and approaching Demeter certification.
In 2000 I took over a flock of organic colored merino sheep. I have found a humane slaughter facility at Superior Farms where I can bring 6 ram lambs in at a time for harvest of meat. The slaughter is not certified organic, so I cannot sell the meat as certified. But it is USDA cut and wrap and can be sold commercially. Since these are not a meat breed and I do not cross breed my ewes to a larger meat breed, the amount of meat per animal is between 22-30 lbs.
It was the breeding and growing of organic cotton (Colorganic Foxfibre) that brought me to farming, as in the early ’80’s there were no organic cotton farmers, so I had to become one. Raw fiber, or prepared for spinning fiber, and yarns made from Foxfibre Colorganic cotton and merino wool offered for sale via my website: vreseis.

Humanely raised, naturally fed heritage breed lamb, goat, pork
We are a family farm using sustainable farming practices. Our sheep are Navajo-Churro which are descendants from the first sheep brought to the Americas by the Spanish. They have wonderful wool, produce nice milk, and are excellent for eating with sweet, mild meat. Our sheep are entirely grass fed on our farm. They graze our orchards and clean our alfalfa field (non GMO, no spray) of weeds. They also get our home grown or neighbor grown hay. Breeding stock are available, whole and half lambs, cuts of lamb, and wholesale sales are available throughout the year. Navajo-Churro are listed on the Slow Food USA Ark of Taste and the American Livestock Breed’s Conservation priority list.
We raise Tamworth and Berkshire hogs known for their bacon and delicious meat. Our hogs are fed natural grains and home grown hay. We have developed some special hay mixes just for the hogs that contain extra nutrients they need. We also grow an heirloom variety of flint corn for the hogs. All hog feed is non-GMO. Whole and half hogs are sold year round.
All of our animals are raised without growth hormones and antibiotics. On the rare occasion an animal gets sick and an antibiotic can help it we will administer to that single animal separate from the others. But that animal is then marked and never sold to meat customers.
